Saturday 27th September - Cycle Ride to the
Brick Pond
Meet
at 2pm at the Reading Room, complete with cycle and picnic,
for a cycle ride to the Brick Pond at New Earswick along
cycle tracks led by Olwyn Fonseca. The fresh air and
exercise is all free!
Saturday 25th October - Yorkshire Sculpture Park Meet at
the Reading Room at 10am for a day out at the Yorkshire
Sculpture Park, where we can tour the parkland and its
dramatic sculptures, and take in a pleasant lunch in the
restaurant/cafeteria, or meet us at the YSP Centre near
Wakefield at 11am. Admission is free, car parking is
£4 a day. Let David know on 488674 if you need a lift.
Saturday 1st
November - Timeline York Plus
Meet at 2pm
in the Reading Room for a meeting of Timeline York Plus, an
informal association of historical and archaeological
societies in the area of Greater York, that provides a forum
for the exchange of news and views, and at which Stephen
Moorhouse will talk about his recent historical landscape
survey of Scoreby Manor House, part of the local medieval
township of Scoreby, and the prehistoric round houses he has
discovered in Hagg Wood. Admission free.
Wednesday 3rd
December - Plants, Bugs and Beasties
An
illustrated talk on the interactions between the health of
the plants around us and the insects and other small
creatures in our environment, by Steve Ashby of the Plant
Health Division of the Department for Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Meet at the Reading Room at 8pm.
Admission is free to members, non-members £1.50, and
refreshments 50p.
Friday Afternoons - Hedgerow Survey and Walks
Meet at 5 Church Lane, Dunnington at 2pm on
each Friday afternoon whilst the leaves are on the
hedgerows, to take part in the hedgerow survey of Dunnington
and its surroundings, under the leadership of Barry Wright.
On Friday's 17th October and 21st
November, there will be a Friday walk around Hagg Wood with
local countryman Ron Bielby and Linda Maggs at 2pm, meeting
at the Intake Lane entrance to Hagg Wood. Phone Linda on
489127 if the weather looks bad.
Woodland Working Parties - Conservation in Action These will be
held on the mornings of
Saturdays 20th September, 4th October,
18th October
(no
brushcutters this morning), 15th November and
6th December so do put these dates in your
diary. Meet at 10am at the Hagg Farm end of Intake Lane.
Bring gloves if you can, and wear stout shoes or wellies. We
have plenty of useful things to do in the Wood, in the
bluebell area and elsewhere, so we would be very pleased if
you can join us.
